Ferret, a great many folks bring their own food to the theaters these days. We have for years.. well, for decades, actually. My wife carries a large (not humongous) purse, and we tote in at least 2 or 3 drinks, perhaps a box of candy, or whatever snacks we want (usually something like frosted mini-wheats). Lately, we've been bringing in empty (clean) water bottles, and filling them up in the restroom or water fountain (yes, you can get away with this, usually), and mixing one of the single-pack drink mixes into it. We've toted in hamburgers, hot dogs, even pizza. It's absolutely possible to do it, regardless of whether the theater wants you to. The main theater we go to just took away the popcorn salt, and now charges you for it. Freakin' popcorn salt! Screw them. I'll bring in what I want, and because we're careful (don't flaunt it, obviously), we've never, ever been busted, and we see a movie about twice per month.

Some of these make sense, but a lot of them are the equivalent to saying "Stop being yourself, it's expensive."

Some also have downsides, such as the "Only use prepaid credit cards" tip. One of things credit scores are calculated on is how much credit you have versus how much you have used.

Bargaining with most retail stores is a surefire way to make those people hate you. Oddly, Wal-Mart doesn't give their cashiers the power to haggle. Maybe you didn't mean the big retail establishments, but those are where you will save money.

The popcorn at the theater...seriously? Theaters don't let you bring your own food.

Great tips although the picture for using a condom shows one of the worst mistakes one can make by opening a condom wrapper with one's teeth!
